March 2009: Today is able to start the implementation of the project of construction of the school building for the Ching'ambo Primary School in Mzuzu in the area of Zolozolo West. will construct a two-classroom block and two VIP latrines. The project is possible thanks to the fundraising campaign done during Christmas 2008 "A natale regaliamo una scuola" / "This year for Xmas we donate a school".
Once completed, Ching'ambo school will replace the Matope Church currently used as school in Zolozolo West due to lack of other public infrastructures. In the area where the school will be constructed a wooden shelter is alredy present and should be used as school. However this is impossible during the raining season and now the children are unable to use this temporary structure. In fact all 966 children of the area have their classes in the Matope church, temporary used as social area. The room is small and not enough for the big number of students. The children of different classes sit together without phisical barriers and there are no desks. The 14 teachers need to rotate with their classes in this church. The project funded by started on the 2nd of March 2009 with the one-week management course to ensure the involvement of the community during the implementation of the project and the management of the school once the building is ready. Read more : The management training for the community. The week after the end of the training the construction of the building started. had already identified and collected the technical information necessary for the school construction during the mission of some cactus members in February 2009 with the help of Walusungu, cactus facilitator in Mzuzu. Thanks to different meetings with the technical offices of the City Council and other development agencies (including the European Community office of Mzuzu), we managed to obtain all details for lunching the project in March, including the bills of quantities, the standard drawings of the school, the costs of the major items. We also identified the contractor and the technical supervisor necessary for supervising the construction.
The Community of Zolozolo West will give material (such as bricks, water and wood) and manpower.
The budget has recently been finalised and it is available for consultation.
Below are the plans of the school block and some pictures related to the school done during cactus mission to Mzuzu in February in the area allocated for the school construction by the City Council.

" I got very emotional when I finally met in person the beneficiaries of the projects that seem so far from Italy. I managed to verify that the projects of the last two years were very well implemented. I saw the eyes of the youth that we helped shine with tears of thanks. Now they have a job thanks to cactus.I met orphans smiling and thanking me for a blanket or for an exercise book. I saw with my own eyes boys and girls that have played the cactus movie and that believe that one day they will also have a life expectancy of 80 year, as we have here in Italy, and not 50 as they have in Malawi because they are killed by HIV. I spoke with village-chiefs who have no idea how to manage the big number of orphans in their locations. I met many people that need some help and have asked cactus to help them. We will not be able to help them because we do not have enough funds. I had to say NO to many requests of help. It was hard. But I managed to say YES to the headmaster of the school that hopes to give a proper shelter to his pupils and together we have celebrated the start up of the project for constructing a school block for the 900 children in the neighborhood of Zolozolo West.
On behalf of the youth and the entire community of Mzuzu:
THANK YOU ! Together we are doing great things!
3rd March 2009, Salva
