In one of the areas more affected by the Darfur crisis, Zalingi hospital provides secondary health services to more than 700,000 people: IDPs living at the camps around the town, host population from the entire eastern corridor of the state, local communities. It provides emergency obstetric services, surgery for obstetric fistulae patients and major routine and emergency surgeries. 

Although the hospital is supported by international NGOs, there is no blood bank in the health facility. Many patients have been lost because of that. The blood transfusion process at the hospital is very primitive, using the old process of transfusing fresh blood if the patient is lucky to have donation from his/her relatives or co-patient. Many surgical and obstetric cases are at high risk of dying just because of bleeding.
With the support of   the project aims at providing one blood refrigerator to establish the blood bank.

At the hospital there is already one trained lab technician to deal with the blood bank. Ministry of Health, WHO and UNFPA will support the investigation kits and blood bags, the community will donate blood for stock and Zalingi hospital will provide a small generator for continuous electricity for the refrigerator.
