Mr. Walusungu Nyasulus reports to us: " The chiefs from these beneficiary communities expressed their great happiness for the support rendered to the orphans of their communities, and thanked cactus onlus for keeping their promise, since it had just taken few weeks for the implementation of the project since the collection of data in the community. They said that a lot of organizations collect data on orphans but then they disappear. Lastly the chiefs of the six communities requested more help since the number of orphans is increasing day by day". Read more: Project update
In Mzuzu, the capital of Northern Malawi, there are about 6500 HIV/AIDS orphans. Most of these orphans lack proper shelter, clothes, basic education. Some of them have lost both parents, and are child headed families. Orphans spend their time in the streets and are expected to earn a living to support their small brothers and sisters. Therefore school drop out has been increasing and in order to survive children are forced into different malpractice that put them at risk of HIV/AIDS, drug and alcohol abuse, and other criminal offences. In Mzuzu unemployment rate is high and lots of the girls then indulge in prostitution and unprotected sex in exchange for a job opportunity or for getting a living.
The project will initially reinforce Mzuzu Youth Centre (MYC) to become the centre of the project activities and to support its mission of reaching the youth and orphans. The project shall train in management 15 youth from mushrooming youth NGOs (involved in HIV/AIDS prevention and solidarity/social activities) with no capacity in project and organizational management to be part and parcel of the implementing team. Through the MYC youth 100 orphans and vulnerable children will receive blankets (as the weather is currently absolutely cold) and soap (a luxury item in Malawi). 4 girls ans 4 boys from MYC will be selected to undergo vocational training courses for acquisition of different skills. This is a first step of a bigger project that will encompasses several other activities with the youths, such as vocational training for more girls and boys and more support to the orphans.
