“Last year I've worked as medical coordinator for a project in Darfur, Sudan. While working over there, my team built a small school in Kulbus, an isolated village five hours drive away from El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur. Two big class rooms have been built with less than USD 1,500, money that had been donated by friends and relatives before I left for Darfur. This school would have never been built with the resources of the project I was working on because those funds had been allocated for health activities only. Therefore, without these private donations the children of Kulbus would not have had their school. Now that I'm about to be assigned to another post as medical coordinator for an International NGO, I was asking myself how I could continue supportin these kinds of activities in my spare time. My brother-in-law gave me the answer: we'd have to found a small organisation to raise funds in Italy. As we felt supported by the enthusiasm and the commitment of family and friends , we decided to found cactus onlus, an organisation based in Italy raising funds to implement small projects (like the Kulbus school) in developing countries" Dr. Cecilia, March 2007
A group of friends who share the same ideas of solidarity and who want to do something for the others funded on the 1st of April 2007. Some of us are professionals who work in international cooperation; others work in Italy in the social sector; others still are at their first experience in the development sector.
